Characterization of neuroinflammation and periphery-to-CNS inflammatory cross-talk in patients with disc herniation and degenerative disc disease

Concentrations of IL-8 in CSF were significantly higher in LDH patients compared to DDD patients and controls
.•In LDH patients there was a positive correlation of IL-8 concentrations between CSF and serum.
•Elevated IL-8 in CSF was associated with increased pain intensity and spinal pressure pain sensitivity in LDH.
IL-6, IL-8 and TSPO expression in IVD was higher in DDD patients compared to LDH.
•TSPO gene expression in IVDs was associated with higher back pain intensity in LDH patients.
