Impact of exercise training status on the fiber type-specific abundance of proteins regulating intramuscular lipid metabolism This study provides insight into the muscle fiber type-specific adaptations that underlie the elevated storage and utilization of IMCL during exercise in endurance-trained men. These results demonstrate that a greater proportion of type I muscle fibers in combination with upregulation of protein expression promotes greater abundance of proteins regulating IMCL metabolism when viewed at the level of whole muscle. These adaptations in combination with greater IMCL storage likely contribute to the high capacity for fat oxidation in endurance-trained individuals. These results also highlight the importance of considering muscle fiber type-specific differences when examining lipid metabolism and its regulation in human skeletal muscle.
