The regulation of the homeostasis and regeneration of peripheral nerve is distinct from the CNS and independent of a stem cell population In summary, we report that peripheral nerve provides a further example of the diverse mechanisms by which tissues maintain themselves and repair following injury. In the adult, peripheral nerve is highly quiescent yet retains function throughout adulthood. However, despite this stability, it has remarkable regenerative properties without the need for a specialised stem cell compartment – instead all the cell types of the nerve are able to proliferate to contribute to the regeneration of this tissue.
