Childhood maltreatment and manual therapy considerations

Sadly, I've recently seen a few patients with a history of childhood abuse. Each patient has chronic low back pain and widespread hyperalgesia. I wondered whether childhood abuse is a predictor for reduced pain thresholds and chronic pain. I found this article:The rates of childhood maltreatment, defined as 'emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect' are alarming. As are the neuroplastic changes that occur as a result. Childhood maltreatment is related to reduced pain pressure thresholds, emotional abuse is related to temporal summation, and sexual abuse to heightened touch sensitivity.
